😲 High blood pressure. Why is it the perfect culprit🔎?

High blood pressure is defined as values higher than 140/90 mmHg on average and persistently, although the ideal pressure is lower than 120/80 mmHg. Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular events and is the leading cause of death on its own. Followed by smoking, environmental pollution, prediabetes/diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. Although it is also a disease in itself.

From my perspective from regular consultation, hypertension is indeed the perfect culprit. Why? Because blood pressure is a vital sign that is modified and affected by any situation that occurs to a person. This can be an illness, a discomfort, a situation of physical/physiological stress, or psychological stress. Furthermore, blood pressure is not a static and single value throughout the day; it has what is called a circadian rhythm.

The key point here is to differentiate the following: is the increase in blood pressure reactive to a particular situation or is it an established disease? It is a common confusion, and one of the reasons is that measuring blood pressure is very simple. Upon detecting elevated pressure, we find the perfect culprit for what is happening to us, but often it is not the case. Clinically investigating in the cardiology consultation is necessary. One of the most frequent causes is situations of emotional stress resulting from work problems or family traumas, although chronic pain, dizziness, among others, are also causes of reactive hypertension. Perhaps, more complex and chronically, obesity and overweight produce secondary high blood pressure.
