What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose (sugar) levels. A hormone called insulin assists in allowing glucose to enter cells to provide them with energy. In individuals with diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use it effectively.
Why is it relevant?
Because it causes organ damage, and without proper control, it leads to severe arterial disease manifested by:
Heart Attack
Stroke
Blindness
(Leading cause of blindness in México)
Amputations
(Leading cause of lower limb amputation in Mexico)
High-Cost Procedures and Hospitalizations
13.5% of Mexicans have diabetes, and the leading cause of death is cardiac-related.
Teamwork to control glucose levels, body weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol ensures a better quality and quantity of life. Proper diabetes management is a fundamental pillar for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
