Every November 14th, World Diabetes Day🌎 is commemorated, which is an opportunity to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on people's health. It also aims to highlight the opportunities to strengthen the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes.
Mexico has a high prevalence of diabetes, with the curve steadily increasing, reaching 16.9% in 2021 (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/diabetes-prevalence?region=NorthAmerica) and a death rate of 67.3% per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in the world (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/death-rate-from-diabetes-ghe?time=2019).
People living with diabetes are up to three times more likely to die from cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease, or cancer. The number of people living with diabetes has more than tripled in the Region since 1980, and it could be even higher as 40% of people with diabetes are unaware of their condition.
The burden of disease associated with diabetes is enormous and growing: in just 20 years, diabetes-related mortality has increased by 70% worldwide. In the Americas, it is the sixth leading cause of death and the seventh leading cause of premature years of life lost. Almost half of premature deaths in the Americas are due to diabetes.
People living with diabetes are at higher risk of severe illness and death from other diseases. The most common complications include:
Heart disease and stroke: People with diabetes are twice as likely as those without diabetes to have heart disease, including angina and heart attacks, or strokes.
Blindness and other eye problems: Damage to the blood vessels of the retina (diabetic retinopathy), clouding of the eye's lens (cataracts), and increased pressure in the eye's fluid (glaucoma). Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people aged 40 to 74.
Kidney disease: High blood sugar levels can damage the kidneys and cause chronic kidney disease. Untreated chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure. People with kidney failure need regular dialysis (a treatment that filters the blood) or a kidney transplant to survive. Approximately 1 in 3 adults with diabetes has chronic kidney disease. You won't know if you have it unless your doctor tests you for it.
Nerve damage (neuropathy): One of the most common complications of diabetes, nerve damage, can cause numbness and pain. Nerve damage most often affects the feet and legs but can also affect digestion, blood vessels, and the heart.
Amputations: Damage to blood vessels and nerves related to diabetes, especially in the feet, can cause serious and difficult-to-treat infections. Amputation of affected parts may be necessary to stop the spread of these infections.
Keeping blood glucose levels well controlled reduces the risk of severe illness or death. Unfortunately, 50% to 70% of people living with diabetes have uncontrolled blood glucose levels.
It's important to consult with your cardiologist and endocrinologist for a detailed clinical evaluation🩺 and determine the best treatment according to your condition💊.
